More than half of infants experience gastrointestinal disorders, including digestive problems, during their first year of life. This may result in feeding issues that impact the growth of a baby and often lead to a lack of sleep for both the infant and parents. A common digestive disorder is colic, which is reported to affect 20% of infants in their first year of life.(1) Colic is a group of symptoms often seen in young infants, the most prominent of which is prolonged crying.(2)

Predigested whey protein can assist the digestion process

At birth, the digestive system of an infant is still immature. Intact protein is digested enzymatically in the gastrointestinal tract by pepsin. This enzyme is most efficient at pH 1.5-2.5. However, as the pH of the infant stomach is 4.5, pepsin is less efficient and the level of protein hydrolysis is relatively low in the infant stomach compared to adults.(3) This means greater effort is needed to digest the protein, which can lead to discomfort and cramps.

Moderately pre-digested proteins can assist the digestion process and help to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.(4,5) The Hyvital® product range from FrieslandCampina Ingredients encompasses a range of partially hydrolysed products based on whey protein. Organic is gaining in popularity

Organic is gaining in popularity

The demand for organic products has gained popularity in recent years as consumers increasingly consider the health and environmental consequences of their food choices. This is also reflected in buying behavior, with 20% of people worldwide looking at an organic claim when buying a product.(6) Of all organic food categories, the Infant & Toddler category has shown the strongest growth in organic product launches over the past five years (2014-2019), with over 5,000 products introduced worldwide in 2019.(7) Within the Infant & Toddler category, product launches addressing ‘anti-colic’ benefits are also increasing. In recent years (2015-2019), the product introductions for infants (0-12 months) that support the dietary management of colic have tripled.(8) These involve introductions in non-organic comfort ranges. However, until now organic hydrolysates were not available for use in organic comfort formula. But that has changed; to help support infant nutrition with distinctive organic comfort formulas, we would like to introduce you to our newest product: Hyvital® Whey EtD 100 Organic.
