HMOs

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are non-digestible carbohydrates found in human milk. Some HMOs can be produced via fermentation technology using lactose as a substrate. Enhancing infant milk formula with HMOs* can support gut health, immune health and cognitive function in early life (Bode & Jantscher-Krenn, 2012; Bode et al, 2012; Bode, 2012)

GOS

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are a complex blend of non-digestible oligosaccharides derived from the enzymatic conversion of lactose. A large body of scientific evidence supports the influence of GOS on the composition of the infant gut microbiota when added to infant milk formula (Ben et al, 2008; Fanaro et al, 2009; Giovannini et al, 2014; Sierra et al, 2014). This helps explain why GOS is the most widely applied oligosaccharide in infant milk formula globally.

MFGM

Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is a tri-layered membrane surrounding fat particles in milk, which contains bioactive proteins and lipids. MFGM offers potential immune and cognitive health benefits for infants (F. Li et al, 2019; X. Li et al, 2019; Timby et al, 2014, 2015, 2017)

Micro-encapsulated LCPUFAs

Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) like DHA and ARA are well-known for their positive effect on brain and visual development (Koletzko et al, 2014; Koletzko et al, 2020) as well as supporting role in immune function in early life (Radzikowska et al, 2019; Richard et al, 2016). At FrieslandCampina Ingredients we offer LCPUFAs in a microencapsulated form. Microencapsulation technology prevents oxidation and subsequent loss of nutritional and sensorial quality.

Nutritional lipids

Fat is an important component of human milk, delivering approx. 50-60% of an infant’s energy needs. Dairy lipids, such as milk fat, ensure an optimal fat composition and structure in an infant milk formula as well as help to avoid potential gut discomfort (Hageman et al, 2019;Quinlan et al, 1995)

Demineralised whey

The casein:whey protein ratio in human milk is 40:60, whereas it is 80:20 in cow’s milk. Demineralised whey is commonly used in infant milk formula to rebalance the casein:whey ratio, while limiting minerals contribution. Demineralisation ensures flexibility for manufacturers regarding mineral content in the final product.
